Why are they up there?

Why do shoes end up on top of electrical wires and light posts?  One man in New Zeland set out to answer this question and has crawled the world to put together a gallery of these shoe shots (mine pictured above – 5.5 yrs and hanging.)

Geoff Budd was featured in a recent news article.  Or check out his site, soleintentions.com.

When asked why I had a pair of shoes hanging on a lamppost, this was my reply:

Hey Geoff, I’d be more then happy to share the photo with your site, thanks for asking.

I might have an interesting story for this phenomenon. Those are actually my shoes, the photo was taken 5.5 years after my shoes were thrown up there. That is at my college, Boston University.

It was my junior year summer and I was walking home from the gym with a friend. The shoes had rips and tears in them and they were killing my feet. So I said fuck it, let me see if I can throw them up there – I hadn’t done that before, so why not.

I gave it a few tries and kept missing. It’s actually a little harder then it looks to get them hooked up there.

Then my friend gave it a shot and on the first try they were up there.

I guess they’re up there for a few reasons:
1) They hurt my feet and I didn’t want them anymore
2) I thought it was cool to leave a part of me behind
3) I was moving out of that neighborhood at the end of the summer, so I was curious how long they would stay up. I never imagined this long.

When I took that pick, I was absolutely shocked that they’ve been up so long. Graduation classes have come and past and they’re still up there. I’m curious how many ppl walked by, saw those, stopped, thought about why they were up there, and then continued on their way…

Was that Doug or Brent?  Wasn’t I with you when you took this photo last year around Doug’s wedding?
