Overhead in Palo Alto

University Ave is filled with weirdos.

I’m sitting in a Starbucks on University Ave and there’s another guy sitting next to me reading notes.  An older man walks in wearing a leather jacket.  He’s a little dirty.  He walks up in between my table and the guy sitting next to me.  He has a blank stare on his face for a bit, let’s refer to him as ‘fella.’

Coming from nyc, I’m well aware of the "don’t make eye-contact rule" which has saved me countless times from stepping into the wrong situation.

The guy next to me made ‘eye-contact’ with this fella to which in turn the fella says "I can only stay for 10 min."  (I should add that tables here are just large enough for one person to sit with a laptop, or two people to sit intimately.)

Now, that’s a normal phrase if you’re expecting to meet a friend and only have a bit of time to chat.  It’s not normal when that’s how your asking if you can take a seat.  I wasn’t sure which category this fell into, so I assumed the two must have known each other, but from the confused look on the guy next to me, that was obviously not the case.

The fella continued to make small talk with our surrounding neighbors, including a phrase along the lines of: "You would make a nice schoolmate…"

He just left by the time I finished the post.  This fella was no liar, he didn’t stay past 10 min.
